Helping to save your riding areas

Dear Member

Big changes at the RTRA with Steve stepping aside, Xander stepping in and the Committee stepping up!

There's also great news from Manjimup and an update on our political advocacy work.

Before you head out, check out the latest news from the RTRA ...

RTRA Swap Meet - July 9

Do you have loads of gear and spare bike parts cluttering up the garage? Kids keep growing out of their gear?

Someone else needs your bike stuff so book a car bay at the RTRA Swap Meet and sell your gear to people who need it...and in the process help the RTRA raise funds to keep doing the work we do to keep our trails and riding areas open.

Only $15 for RTRA members to book a bay. Thanks to Midvale Yamaha we have additional entertainment on the day with a demo rider and bikes will be on show, and of course we have a sausage sizzle.

Date: Sunday July 9, 2017
Time: Set up from 11.30am
Cost for sellers: $15 per car bay for RTRA members only
Cost for buyers: Free
Place: Car park outside Overlander Adventure Equipment, 1/14-22 Farrall Rd, Midvale
Sponsors: Thanks to main sponsor Midvale Yamaha and to our supporter Overlander Adventure Equipment.
Entertainment: Demo rider, trick riding show, sausage sizzle, prizes on the day and a lucky bay competition.

So start rummaging through your garage. We will send full details to all RTRA Members next week along with how to book your bay.

Manjimup Trail Bike Hub - through the first gate

In ground breaking news, the Shire of Manjimup has unanimously voted to adopt the Trail Bike Trail Hub feasibility report. The Shire is considering contributing seed funding to the first stage in setting up a Foundation to progress the hub and in turn seek funding for route development.

The RTRA is working with the Shire regarding their budget process and we should know by August if they can contribute seed funding. The Feasibility Report recommended that the RTRA be the vehicle to progress this and we will need all hands on deck if we move to the next stage.

Thank you to everyone who got involved in this via the survey and workshops...we will keep you posted.

Meeting New Ministers

The RTRA has quickly been active in getting in front of the new Government to argue our case for more places to ride, better facilities and progressing their understanding of our activity.

We have already met with Policy Officers for the Hon Stephen Dawson, Minister for Environment and next week we have meetings with the Hon Mick Murray, Minister for Sport and Recreation and Policy Officers for the Hon David Templeman, Minister for Local Government.

This is often not visible work that your association does on behalf of all riders, but it is critical.

Preventative Burning at Pinjar

Parks & Wildlife has advised that there will be prescribed burning of bushland to the west of the Pinjar Motorcycle Area between April and June.

The burning will not be within the Motorcycle Area, but there is the possibility of temporary closures due to smoke in the area.

We'll notify members via Facebook and email if a closure is scheduled, but riders are also advised to check the area status on the RTRA web site before planning a day at Pinjar.

WA Trails Strategy

At the Trails Industry forum on 19 May, Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray launched the WA Strategic Trails Blueprint, which will guide the next five years of trails development.

The RTRA was well represented at the forum, with four Committee members making a strong presence among the WA trails community.

The Blueprint is an overarching guide for consistent and coordinated planning, development and management of quality trails and trail experiences across Western Australia.

Importantly trail bikes are included as one of nine trail types which provides a basis for us to progress our claims for a better legal framework for trail bikes, more trails and more designated areas.

Adventure Rally Cancelled

Last month we received the disappointing news that the T&E Club's popular adventure rally was cancelled this year.

The event has been running for 33 years, but due to requirements for a forest hygiene survey the area that DPaW would permit was simply too small and remote to justify holding the event.

The cancellation is another reminder that authorised riding areas for events are getting harder to find, and even areas with a long tradition of riding can be lost.  As the voice of recreational trail riders the RTRA is committed to trying to keep as many opportunities to ride as possible.

Pinjar Maintenance Morning

Our next Bi-Monthly Maintenance Morning will be Saturday, June 10.

If you or your kids enjoy riding Pinjar please come along to lend a hand.

Apart from a general cleanup and inspection of the tracks we will be doing some pre-winter drainage works on the PeeWee trail to prevent the pooling of water on the inside of turns - so bring a shovel if you have one.

We’ll be meeting at 10am at the Family Zone car park.

Special Offer for RTRA Members

Overlander Adventure Equipment is giving RTRA members early notice and a week of exclusive access to this special offer - $200 off the Plain Colour range of NEXX XD1 dual sport helmets (RRP $699.00) and $250.00 off the Baja Colour range NEXX XD1 dual sport helmets (RRP $799.00).

Just print out this email and head to Overlander Adventure Equipment.

(Sale applies only to in store stock, in store only, no laybys, no special order, no rainchecks).

Membership Auto-Renewal

If your RTRA membership falls due for renewal in June you will shortly receive a Renewal Invoice.

If the credit card you used last year is still valid and hasn’t expired you don’t need to take any action - your renewal will happen automatically. We’ll get in touch if you need to update your card details.

This is a new system (we announced it last year but it’s only now processing the auto-renewals) so we can't guarantee that there won't be the odd glitch.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Minimal Impact: Avoid Wet Areas

Winter riding means some of the places we ride with minimal impact in summer will become waterlogged and prone to damage.

Water is the most damaging thing that can happen to a trail, and where - and how - we ride through wet areas can mess things up for years.

You can help protect our trails by avoiding trails that develop known bog-holes or swampy patches and not creating or worsening ruts up hills.

If there's standing water on the trail, slow down and ride through it rather than making the trail wider by riding around it. And remember that dieback spreads more easily when mud is picked up on wheels and frames, so be especially aware of DRA exclusion areas and always make sure you wash your bike thoroughly between rides.

Winter is both the best time to ride and the time when the environment is at its most vulnerable. We all need to take responsibility for protecting our trails for the future..

Help Spread the Word

New to the RTRA?  Here are the four key objectives the RTRA pursues:
  • To protect and extend quality, safer off-road riding opportunities for Western Australian recreational trail bike riders of all ages.
  • To promote and encourage safety and responsible riding attitudes, including minimising noise and trail damage.
  • To actively pursue the needs of trail bike riders with State and Local Government, landowners and other stakeholders.
  • To improve the perception of trail bike riding as a recreational activity.
If you think the RTRA is having a positive impact for riders, just think how much more effective we'd be if we had double the members.  It's actually not that hard - all it takes is for each member to find one other rider to sign up.

If you have riding buddies who are not yet members of the RTRA, please forward them this email and give them a prod to join up.
