Dear Member
October is always a busy month, both on and off the trails. It's that last burst before the dust returns, and while everything is still looking green and fresh.
Before you mount up and head off again here's a quick update on what's been happening and what's coming up:
New Minister for Off Road Vehicles
We're still waiting for a meeting with Minister Mia Davies - and now we have to add a new Local Government Minister to the list following the resignation of Tony Simpson.
The new Minister for Off Road Vehicles (he gets that as a bonus with the Local Government role) is Paul Miles, MLA, Member for Wanneroo.
Minister Miles was very supportive of the State Trail Bike Strategy in the Parliamentary debate of March 2011, saying: "I am very supportive of the Back on Track strategy. We need to get this strategy up and running as fast as we can."
In his new role he will have a great opportunity to influence that. As did his predecessor.
RTRA AGM and Social Night - October 26
Put this in your diary now - our annual AGM / Social Night at the Oxford Hotel, Leederville. Anyone who has attended one of these can tell you that the formalities are kept brief to give plenty of time for catching up and talking all things dirt.
There will be food, a cash bar, and plenty of prizes and surprises - and of course we'll bring you up to date with what the RTRA has achieved throughout the year and what we have planned for the future. The event is free for all current financial members - please register to attend.
If you have ever wanted to get involved in the running of the RTRA, the AGM is also the time to nominate for the Committee. We are always on the lookout for energetic, passionate riders who want to ensure a riding future for ourselves, our kids and future generations.
Further details, including nomination forms, will be emailed to all members soon.
Outdoors October
It's Outdoors October again. A time to come out of hibernation and enjoy the great outdoors. Of course as trail riders we are at our most active in Winter - but who needs an excuse to go for a ride?
This year, let's make sure that trail bikes are well represented in the Outdoors October social media.
Take a photo when you're out on your favourite trail and use #OutdoorsOctober or @OutdoorsOctober to tag your photo on Instagram and Facebook.
Make sure your photos make a good impression (no wheelies down the main street please!) and family style shots are the best. There are even prizes to be won.
Pinjar Maintenance Morning / Open Day - October 15
Our next Pinjar Maintenance Morning will be Saturday October 15.
This will allow us to combine it with the annual Pinjar Open Day which is part of the Outdoors October program of events.
DPaW will once again be on site with their barbecue and we use the Open Day to encourage any families who have not yet experienced Pinjar to come out, have a look around and a ride.
If you live in the southern suburbs and would like to have a facility like Pinjar closer to home, come along and speak to us about how you can get involved in our advocacy activities south of the river.
Minimal Impact: The Hills are Alive...
With the weather finally expected to turn Spring-like, and all the promotion of Outdoors October, we can expect to see many more people out on the trails over the next few weeks.
Walkers, trail runners, horses, mountain bikes - they'll all be coming out of hibernation and hitting the trails.
So be careful out there, and courteous to other trail users. Slow right down as you pass other trail users and don't get back on the gas until you're way past them. And be prepared to encounter a group of seniors, families, horses, mountain bikes, 4WDs or assorted wildlife around every blind corner!
For a refresher course on horse etiquette on the trails see the Australian Horse Trail Riders' Associations Sharing the Trails suggestions.
Help Spread the Word
New to the RTRA? Here are the four key objectives the RTRA pursues:
- To protect and extend quality, safer off-road riding opportunities for Western Australian recreational trail bike riders of all ages.
- To promote and encourage safety and responsible riding attitudes, including minimising noise and trail damage.
- To actively pursue the needs of trail bike riders with State and Local Government, landowners and other stakeholders.
- To improve the perception of trail bike riding as a recreational activity.
If you think the RTRA is having a positive impact for riders, just think how much more effective we'd be if we had double the members. It's actually not that hard - all it takes is for each member to find one other rider to sign up.
If you have riding buddies who are not yet members of the RTRA, please forward them this email and give them a prod to join up.
