Helping to save your riding areas

Dear Member

Riders are facing a potentially serious restriction on riding areas with the State Government's proposed reforms to water catchment access rule in country areas.  The RTRA will be lobbying on behalf of all riders to maintain access to legal twin tracks and unformed public roads (see story below).

Meanwhile there are several significant events on and off the trails over the next few weeks. Read on to find out what's coming up for riders and your association...

Pinjar Open Day - Saturday October 12

Outdoors October is a month-long celebration of outdoor recreation in all its forms - including trail bike riding. As our contribution to the program we are holding an Open Day at the Pinjar Motorcycle Area to welcome new families.

The day will start at 10am with the monthly maintenance morning, then at 11am we will be officially opening the newly resurfaced Family Trail. DPaW will be providing lunch for the maintenance volunteers.

With the PeeWee circuit re-graded and the full 6m Family Trail resurfacing expected to be completed the place is now even better for families.

If you've been thinking about visiting Pinjar this will be a good day to come and check it out.

Social Night & AGM - Tuesday October 29

The 2013 AGM and Social Night is set for Tuesday October 29 at the Oxford Hotel Leederville (please note the change of date from last month's newsletter).

As in previous years we will dispense with the formalities of the AGM fairly quickly to allow for maximum socialising and guest speakers. And as in previous years admission for financial members is free!

Formal notice and RSVP details will be emailed to members next week.

Perth Motorcycle Show - November 1-3

The RTRA will again have a stand at the Perth Motorcycle Show on November 1-3. This year's show will be held at Claremont Showgrounds and for the first time there will be a separate Off Road area for manufacturers, retailers and clubs.

The Motorcycle Show is a great way of spreading the word about what the RTRA does and why it's important for off road riders, but being there for the three days is a big time commitment, and typically it's spread amongst only a few people. If you are able to come and help on the stand for a few hours over the weekend we would be grateful for the support. Contact if you are able to help out.

Water Reforms a Risk for Riders

The RTRA is gearing up for a campaign to protect riders' rights to access twin trail and minor roads in country water catchment areas.

On Thursday the Government announced plans to bring the Country Areas Water Supply Act into line with the Metropolitan Act. The significance of this for riders is that the Metropolitan Act makes it an offence to ride on anything other than a 'graded, gravelled, sealed, primed or other prepared surface'. Goodbye twin track and unformed bush tracks in vast areas that are designated as country catchment areas.

We are currently seeking clarification from the Department of Water and will bring you further information as soon as possible.

The Duck's Nuts

We recently came across another new commercial ride park - The Ducks Nuts Motorbike Park.  The Ducks Nuts is an MX facility in Popanyinning, 25km south of Brookton. Trail, MX and quad bikes are welcome.

Open Friday to Monday inclusive at a cost of $50 per day with free camping.   Bookings are essential.  Contact John on 0498 604 722.

FIFO Survey

While organised sports can be impractical for people working irregular rosters and FIFO, trail bike riding seems to be a popular alternative. Grab a few mates and hit the trails any day of the week.

As part of our program of demonstrating the value of trail bike riding to society we are interested in getting the views of people who ride between rosters. If you work FIFO or shift work and choose to ride trails on your time off please fill in our quick survey. It will only take five minutes and it could help us to achieve more favourable public attitudes towards trail riders.

KTM Dirt Days - Sunday October 13

The popular KTM Dirt Day is back for 2013, and this time on a more enduro-friendly property than last year's sand trail.

Dirt Days are a great way of experiencing the latest enduro and MX weaponry from KTM in a real off-road environment. Unfortunately the new Freeride 250 and the 2014 model Freeride 350 won't be available as they won't arrive in Australia in time but there is still plenty of orange to be sampled.

See to register or contact your local KTM dealer.

Minimal Impact - South West Creek Alert

The record September rains have dumped a heap of water into the rivers and creeks throughout the South-West, making some popular trails impassable and low-lying trails boggy.

If you're planning a ride, try to stick to ridge lines and high ground. It could prevent you having to backtrack miles from an impassably deep and fast-flowing creek crossing and it will also reduce the trail damage that can be done when conditions are wet. And be on the lookout for downed trees across the trails - there are lots of them!

Follow the RTRA on Facebook

Our new Facebook page is proving popular and we'll continue to expand this as a way of making it easier for our members to engage with the RTRA.

We hope you 'like' it - and don't forget to share it with your friends!

You'll find us at

Spread the Word

If you think the RTRA is having a positive impact for riders, just think how much more effective we'd be if we had double the members.  It's actually not that hard - all it takes is for each member to find one other rider to sign up.   If you have riding buddies who are not yet members of the RTRA, please forward them this email and give them a prod to join up.
