Helping to save your riding areas

Dear Member

Happy Fathers' Day to all the dads out there.  Did you get breakfast in bed or a leave pass for a Sunday ride this morning?  Or maybe a Sunday ride with the family!

As we head into Spring here's an update on what's coming up for riders and your association.  Read on...

ABC Stateline at Pinjar Next Week

ABC TV's Stateline program is doing a story on trail bike issues following questions raised in parliament last week.  A journalist and cameraman will be at Pinjar on Saturday September 7 to see how the area is progressing.

This will be a great opportunity to show the family-friendly side of our activity and what could be achieved if local government ever got interested in providing facilities other than soccer ovals and netball courts!

If you're a Pinjar regular and like what's being created there we'd encourage you to come down on Saturday morning.

Later Start for Pinjar Maintenance Mornings

By popular demand we have moved the start time of the Monthly Maintenance Morning (first Saturday of each month) to 10am.

Last month a small group managed to clean up both car parks and did a walk-through of the proposed Short n Curly circuit development.  This month we need to clean up a load of timber that has been dumped by some peanut in the western car park.  As always, the more people we have the quicker we can get it done and go riding.  Saturday, September 7 at 10am in the Western car park.

Nominations for Advisory Committee

At the request of the Department of Local Government we are calling for supplementary nominations to represent the interests of ORV users on the Off Road Vehicle Advisory Committee.

Members of the Advisory Committee should have a good working knowledge of the Control of Vehicles (Offroad Areas) Act 1978, be familiar with ORV initiatives and issues around the state and preferably have a current understanding of similar initiatives nationally and internationally.

Deadline for nominations is September 5, so if you are interested please email info@rtra.asn.au for further details.

Inspection Shows Pilot Trail Holding Together

Head of the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) Trails unit, Stuart Harrison, and new motorised recreation officer Danielle Stone were at Metro Rd this week with Senior Ranger Paul Udinga and RTRA President Steve Pretzel to inspect wear and tear on the Pilot Trail.

Of special interest was the new section of single trail created close to the end of the trail, and the adjacent section of remediated single trail that includes a creek crossing.

The inspection revealed that the new section of trail is coping well with the 4,000+ laps that have been completed over the past year, with just the start of whoops now forming.  The work to shed water off the trail is also proving successful, showing that with proper planning the amount of maintenance required on a trail bike trail can be significantly reduced.

DPaW Track Adoptions

The RTRA is hoping to conclude a Track Adoption Agreement with DPaW that will provide support and funding to assist RTRA members with clean-up and trail maintenance work at Pinjar and Metro Road.

Track Adoptions have been used successfully by 4WD clubs and are a great way of getting trail users engaged in maintaining and improving the trails they use.  This will be the first time that a motorcycle group has been involved in this program and it will build on the recent work of RTRA members at Gnangara, Julimar, Pinjar and Metro Road.

Spread the Word

If you think the RTRA is having a positive impact for riders, just think how much more effective we'd be if we had double the members.  It's actually not that hard - all it takes is for each member to find one other rider to sign up.   If you have riding buddies who are not yet members of the RTRA, please forward them this email and give them a prod to join up.
