Dear Member,
It's been a great start to the peak riding season, but a bad start to the year in terms of serious accidents. The RTRA is committed to doing as much as possible to make riding a safer activity, and to ensure riders are well prepared if things do go wrong.
Read on for details of these and other projects...
Trail Bike Riders' First Aid Course - June 29/30

A big part of the attraction of trail bike riding is getting away from civilisation. That's also a big part of the risk. If things go bad when you're more than an hour from a hospital it can be a serious event.
That's why the RTRA has worked with Wilderness First Aid Consultants to develop a Basic Wilderness First Aid for Trail Bike Riders Course.
The two day course will focus on the types of injuries most likely to occur on a ride, including breaks, dislocations, neck / spinal injuries and head injuries. You'll learn how to assess injuries and how to care for an injured rider for an extended period while waiting for evacuation. The first course will run over the weekend of June 29 and 30. Cost is $280 per rider and the RTRA will even provide two years membership free ($50 value) for each participant.
We need a minimum of 15 riders, so get your fellow riders to chip in or nominate someone from your usual group to do the course. Click here for further details and to book your place.
Metro Road Cleanup Day - June 15
We've had a great response to our call for volunteers for a Metro Road cleanup day on Saturday June 15.
The RTRA and DEC will be cleaning up the three main parking areas, then DEC will host a BBQ lunch - and then it's ride time!
Obviously the more volunteers we have the quicker we'll finish the cleanup and the earlier we'll get on to the eating and riding part, so if you're free that morning please register your interest to come along.
We're particularly keen for people with four wheel drives and trailers that can be used for carting bags of rubbish to a central pickup point.
Work begins (at last) on Pinjar Family Trail

Now that we have some wetter weather we've been able to make a start on the long-awaited project to resurface the Family Trail at Pinjar.
Paul has been out preparing the trail surface to receive the clay and as soon as DEC can get it laid we will have a family-friendly 'Green' level trail.
Riders are requested not to use this trail while works are in progress. We'll let you know when it's ready to ride.

Too many serious accidents in 2013

2013 has gotten off to a bad start in terms of serious bike and quad accidents, with 4 riders killed and at least 7 serious injuries in the first five months.
The RTRA has initiated an Injury Reduction project with Royal Perth Hospital, St John Ambulance, the Injury Prevention Council and Motorcycling WA.
Our starting point is to get better data about the incidents that occur to help us understand the factors that cause the most serious injuries. We will then look at ways of reducing these incidents, including rider education and safety measures at popular riding areas.
Get Out Yonda
For many of us the idea of grabbing a few mates and heading out to the Holland Track or an outback adventure is a great dream, but without a support vehicle carrying fuel and supplies it's always going to remain just a dream.
Well what if you could just dial up a full support crew to bring not just fuel but also the food and accommodation you need. That's what Outyonda Tours provide - and at a very reasonable price. Outyonda can accommodate groups of 8-20 riders for tours from 2 to 20 days. If you want some inspiration about where to go they can provide that too. Contact Brett on 0429 831040 or see www.outyonda.com.au.
New RTRA Committee Member
We welcome Peter Otley from Steve's Motorcycles in Midvale onto the RTRA Management Committee. Peter is a keen advocate for off road riding and has been involved with local issues in the City of Swan. It's great to have someone from the industry on the Committee, particularly at a time when we are more engaged with motorcycle retailers though the Off Road Motorcycle Industry Forum initiative. Welcome Peter!
Minimal Impact - Livestock Etiquette

Take care when riding along property fence lines, especially if there is livestock in the adjacent paddock.
A loud bike can panic livestock and make them run away. Sheep in particular can miscarry when this happens and that's lost income for the farmer.
As some of the best trails follow property fence lines we really need to keep property owners on side.
So if you see livestock in a paddock please button off the gas and ride quietly. If they appear startled, slow down even more. The sheep will appreciate your consideration - and so will the shepherd!
Follow the RTRA on Facebook
Our new Facebook page is proving popular and we'll continue to expand this as a way of making it easier for our members to engage with the RTRA.
We hope you 'like' it - and don't forget to share it with your friends!
You'll find us at www.rtra.asn.au/facebook
Spread the Word
If you think the RTRA is having a positive impact for riders, just think how much more effective we'd be if we had double the members. It's actually not that hard - all it takes is for each member to find one other rider to sign up. If you have riding buddies who are not yet members of the RTRA, please forward them this email and give them a prod to join up.
