Helping to save your riding areas

Dear {tag_recipientfirstname},

Last month of summer!  It's been a relatively quiet time for the RTRA over summer, but things are now starting to crank up for the year.

Here's what's happening...

Mundaring Trail Bike Forum

Mundaring Shire will be hosting a trail bike community forum on Tuesday March 1st.

The forum will run from 6.30 to 8.30pm and will give local residents and trail bike riders the opportunity to raise issues about trail bike riding in the area.

Steve and Valerie Pretzel will provide an overview and update of the State Trail Bike Strategy and will field questions.

It's important that this meeting isn't dominated by trail-bike-hating locals (and there are plenty of them - remember the 'nails on trails' issue from last year?) so we encourage as many RTRA members who live and / or ride in the hills to attend this meeting and put forward the trail bike riders' perspective.

RSVP to the Shire of Mundaring by 23rd February on 9290 6682 or if you are able to attend.

Harvey Shire Bans on Bikes on Beaches

Sorry, we lost this one.  The submission by the RTRA to prevent the Shire of Harvey from banning all motorcycles and quad bikes from the Myalup and Binningup beach areas - even road registered motorcycles - was ignored and the Shire has introduced the ban.

We pointed out several misleading inaccuracies in the 'discussion paper' issued by the Shire but the power of local governments to enact 'Local Laws' pretty much means they can do as they please.

Clearly the removal of another popular riding area will simply put more pressure elsewhere - a point that we will emphasise in our discussions with the state government.

Please let us know if you used to ride in this area and / or have been targeted by the new ban.

Pilot Trail Project

We are still awaiting final confirmation of our proposed alignment from DEC.  Unofficially we have been advised that all is OK.

Unfortunately, once the fire season starts all DEC resources tend to get committed to fire management.  With the current weather not conducive to trail building activities the delay is not a major problem.

You can read more information about this project here.

State Trail Bike Strategy

We have it on good authority that the strategy finally made it to Cabinet in February.

This means that it has now been officially noted, but there's still a long way to go before we can expect a funding and implementation announcement.

Meanwhile there has been a re-shuffle of portfolios amongst the Ministry, which will give us the opportunity to knock on doors again and try to stimulate some real action. Our message to government: Don't underestimate our persistence!

Outdoors WA Board Appointment

RTRA President, Steve Pretzel, has been appointed to the management board of Outdoors WA, the peak body for the outdoor adventure activity industry in Western Australia.

Outdoors WA advocates for responsible, sustainable and shared use of natural outdoor activities - all of which are objectives of the RTRA.

The organisation is responsible for implementing the Adventure Activity Standards and other industry training and development projects.

Rocks Delay Pinjar PeeWee Trail

More work is needed on the new PeeWee trail at Pinjar in order to make it suitable for younger riders.

The limestone used for this trail needs to be pulverised to get rid of the rock content - many of which are bigger than 100mm diameter.

Fortunately DEC understand the issue and are pulling on more resources to get this additional work done.  As well as dealing with the rock the PeeWee trail will get some additional shaping in corners and general improvements.  We'll advise members when the work is completed.

Kids Ride Day - Wanneroo JMX- Feb 27

Wanneroo Junior MX Club is holding a 'Come and Try' day at the club MX track at Patrick Rd Neerabup (near Wanneroo Golf Course). Riders 4 - 19 years on MX bikes and quads are welcome.

Cost is $25 per rider and no racing licence is needed.  An approved full face helmet, chest guard, goggles, boots and gloves must be worn.

Machine examination at 8.30am with riding to start at 10.30am.  See for details or contact Emma Harte on 0427 757 663.
