Noise a problem at Lancelin

16-Feb-2010

After what could best be described as a ‘strained’ relationship with former CEO Simon Fraser, we welcomed the opportunity to meet with Gingin Shire Council.

The Council is dealing with local resident complaints about noise from the Lancelin Off Road Vehicle Area and instead of simply trying to close the area down is now looking to find practical solutions to the noise problem.

A recent noise monitoring study found a high proportion of bikes and quads to be over the allowable noise limit for the area, so we can expect to see noise limits enforced there more rigorously. It is likely that vehicles not complying will be turned away or their owners fined under the Control Of Vehicles (Off Road Areas) Act.

The message to riders is pretty clear – we can keep the Lancelin area open if we all play our part in cutting out excessive noise. What this means is that competition-level exhaust emissions are OK, but the louder after-market exhausts are a problem.

If you do insist on having a loud exhaust then please ride quietly until you are over the first line of dunes, as the front of the dunes near the car park is where the main problem occurs.

The Shire of Gingin will be conducting noise tests in the Lancelin Off Road Vehicle Area over the next couple of months.  We are staying in touch with their plans and keeping an eye on where this is heading.
