Minimal Impact Riding Program
Funding has been received by the RTRA from the Environmental Community Grants to develop a “Minimal Impact Riding Program” to alert and educate riders to the impact of our riding and how we can adopt behaviours to minimise that impact. The objective being to reduce the impacts of trail bike riding on the environment, thereby assisting with the sustainability of our riding activity.
Specific objectives are:
1. To demonstrate correlations between specific environmental impacts and specific riding behaviours.
2. To gain a greater understanding of rider perceived barriers and benefits to engaging in desired behaviours.
3. To develop tools to reduce the barriers and increase the benefits of adopting minimal impact riding behaviours
4. To develop a measurable program that converts good intentions into actual behaviour.
Current status:
- Our rider survey helped set a baseline of current attitudes and behaviours of riders to minimising their impacts on the environment. What are riders conscious of when riding, what do they do or don't do and do we care? 345 responses were received which is a very robust sample.
- Rider workshops have been organised for the end of November - we will be in touch with everyone from the rider survey who indicated that they wanted to be involved in the Rider Reference Group.
Rider Reference Group:
We've had a strong response by riders to participate in our "Rider Reference Group". The group will provide rider input by identifying ways that rider behaviours can be changed to minimise impacts and then review strategies, campaigns and materials as they are developed.
Thanks for your help, it is appreciated.
